Summertime means warmer weather and, with any luck, lots of sun! While getting Vitamin D or the “sunshine vitamin” has multiple benefits like helping to fight disease and depression,* too much sun without protection can be a danger to your health.
When is the sun the strongest? There is the most danger of sun damage during the summer months. Additionally, the sun’s rays are stronger during the middle of the day, when you are closer to the equator and when you are at higher altitudes**. Keep in mind that your summer vacation destination may have stronger sun than where you live!
At U.N.I., we want to ensure that you have the tools to avoid sun damage this summer. When going outside, make sure to apply sunscreen of at least SPF 15 or higher at least 15 minutes before being out in the sun. Find shade where you are so that you are not directly in the sun’s rays. Be careful around surfaces that reflect the sun like water, snow, concrete or sand. Long sleeve shirts, hats, sunglasses, and other covering clothing can also help protect your skin.
UV damage builds up over time, so make sure to start proper sun protection at an early age! If you have any questions or need other recommendations, give us a call or come into any of our U.N.I. locations.
